Road to Neutral Posture, Power of Performance, and Supreme Wellness, one step at a time.

Summary:

Call me at (503) 724-2755 or schedule an appointment online. See above. Choose A or B. After B, we can determine your Treatment Plan, and schedule your next session or group of sessions.

What I do is help people to increase accurate perception, memory, straighten their bodies, and come into neutral posture, through my Present Moment Program. This has many benefits. I call these benefits Power of Performance, and Supreme Wellness.

Concepts. Awareness, Alignment, Balance, and Movement, leading to Power of Performance, Supreme Wellness.

Present Moment Program: Posture Assessment, Posture Photos, Gait Analysis, Movement Analysis, Healing Light Kata instruction, Focused Massage Therapy (optional).

Progress is measured by baseline comparison through photos and video of each session, using the plumb line photos as a baseline comparison, and also to see movement documented through the videos of each session. In addition, you can learn the Healing Light Kata much faster by being able to see the videos of each session.

The Healing Light Kata is a form that I have developed over many years of dedicated work. Kata means form in the Japanese language. Healing Light means the light and healing power of the sun.

It is a fusion of yoga, Supreme Ultimate Fist, and posture exercises that I have invented, refined and polished into a diamond state over many years. Supreme Ultimate Fist is also known as T’ai Chi Ch’uan.

The Healing Light Kata is designed to bring a person into neutral posture and awareness of the gravity line, for optimal efficiency in balance, alignment, movement, all functions of performance, wellness, and especially to increase accurate perception and memory, in line with the Present Moment Program goals.

The Focused Massage Therapy is recommended, and it will help you to progress much faster, than without it.

There are 3 Tracks. Track 1 documents each session with photos and video. You will have your own private, password-protected page on my website to view the photos and videos of your sessions.

Track 1. This is the best track. It costs twice as much as Track 2 because it takes me at least twice as long to work with the photos, videos, write up your analysis, create and maintain your private password-protected page. Video especially is very labor-intensive and time-consuming. This information will yield outstanding benefits to you, and help you to attain rapid progress in the program goals.

You have the opportunity to learn the system and progress much faster with the photos, videos, written analysis, and your own private password-protected page.

In addition, if you sign a Model Release, I will give you a 10% discount. This will allow me to include your case history to help others, including health care professionals, to learn more about this important work. The discount will be applied after completion of at least 4 sessions.

Track 2 is the same as Track 1, but with no photos, no video, no written analysis, and no private password-protected page. You will have to learn everything while you are in session. There is no opportunity to view photos or videos of the sessions.

Track 3 is for Medical Massage Therapy, by Physician’s Referral and Prescription Form only, billed to your insurance company. Time of each session: one hour.

GOALS. Attain and maintain Neutral Posture, Power of Performance, and Supreme Wellness.

Here is the road in more detail. Hope to see you soon! Steve

  1. Make an appointment. Photo ID required at the time of appointment.

Make a choice between A or B.

A. New Client Consultation, 15 minutes. Cost: Free.

OR

B. Client Intake, 30 minutes. Cost: $25.

New Client Consultation, Fill out forms: Client Intake and Record, Studio Policy and Waiver of Liability. New Client Interview after discussing the Client Intake and Record to determine the Treatment Plan. Finish filling out the Client Intake and Record and agree on the Treatment Plan in writing.

At Chamber of Commerce meetings, we are told:

‘State your name, name of your business, and your tag line in one breath.’

An elevator speech or brief introduction is much the same way, very brief, and to the point.

I have to be very quick here, because it is likely that I have already lost your attention, at 8 seconds!

Here is an interesting study on attention spans (1):

Attention Span Statistics Data

The average attention span in 2015: 8.25 seconds

The average attention span in 2000: 12 seconds

The average attention span of a goldfish: 9 seconds

People may not understand everything that you do, and may not even grasp the essence of what you do because your message is reduced to a very short summary in a ‘tag line’.

These days, people’s attention spans are shorter than they have ever been, and there is more irrelevant noise competing for that too-brief attention span.

It is interesting to see that the average attention span of a human being in 2015 is less than the average attention span of a goldfish, where humans were ahead of a goldfish by three seconds in 2000.

My Present Moment Course is a method of attaining the present moment. Accurate perception leads to accurate memory. It is a state of being, and it is your natural state.

Concepts. Awareness, Alignment, Balance, and Movement, leading to Power of Performance, Supreme Wellness.

In this way, you are able to tune into your own body, find the true cause of imbalances and dysfunction, and see the path to guide a proper course to homeostasis, Supreme Wellness, and Power of Performance.

The primary focus in my clinic is to help you to relieve pain, relax, focus, and find your power. If you are experiencing pain, stress, feeling tired, not sleeping well, these and other symptoms may be caused by a problem with your posture. I have developed my own system to help you achieve neutral posture.

That requires paying attention to what your body is telling you, and also what is happening in the environment you are living in.

Gravity is an essential power in that environment, affecting everything that you do.

Many people needlessly suffer pain and dysfunction from a lack of awareness of neutral posture, and people also suffer from events that happen to the body when they are in static positions too long away from neutral posture.

Injuries can also cause imbalances.

Alignment with classic neutral posture can improve balance, freedom of movement, relief from pain, and you can be handling gravity as your body is designed to handle it.

FIVE STAR REVIEW ON YELP from Julie S.

2/1/2015

“I came to Steve for help with my posture and even though we have only been working together for about a month but I can already see drastic improvements. My hips are more aligned and I’ve been able to release my shoulders and bring my head back. He is very knowledgeable about the body and how it should be positioned to be in proper alignment with gravity. He thoroughly explains the reasoning for everything he does using muscle and skeletal charts as well as a variety of medical books. I find this helpful because it lets me know why he did a certain technique or suggested a specific exercise. In addition to the message therapy he also includes a fusion of yoga, thai chi, and other exercises so that a I can continually improve my posture at home. He breaks down every move, explains what it is targeting, and practice it with me step by step to ensure the correct form. If there is one thing I cannot stress enough is that he will spend as much time as necessary to ensure that I am getting a good treatment. As a side note, I am in my mid 20s and Steve has only ever been professional and I have never felt uncomfortable. Overall Steve is a highly knowledgeable person that just wants to help improve the lives of others and I would recommend him to anyone looking for a long term solution to their daily aches and pains.”

FIVE STAR REVIEW ON YELP from Sandy M.
9/9/2013 Updated review

it looks like my review was ‘filtered.’  I will post it again.

I have been a client of Steve’s for over four years and can highly recommend his work.  He absolutely deserves five stars for his ability to combine therapeutic massage and yoga to help his clients.  He helped to alleviate my scoliosis, totally released my neck so that I can turn my head without stiffness and pain which I had not been able to do for years and taught me a yoga routine that I use every day to maintain strength and flexibility.  He works with people of all ages.  I am one of his older cIients, and he has helped me to have confidence that although I grow older, I can still strive to have the ability to live life at its fullest.  Not only does he have a great knowledge of the body and how to help his clients, he is a very caring person.  That is a winning combination.”

“Steve Davis deserves 5 stars for his marvelous work in yoga and massage.

I have been a client of Steve’s for over 4 years, and he has helped me with scoliosis, has totally released my neck so that I can turn my head without stiffness and pain which I had not been able to do for years, has taught me some wonderful yoga poses and stretches that I do every day to maintain strength and flexibility.

I am one of his older clients and I can tell you that he is able to help people of all ages.  He is a very caring person – cares a lot about his clients, and often gives more time than they pay for; I know that for sure.

Steve effectively incorporates therapeutic massage and yoga in his sessions.  I can totally recommend his services.”

After hearing Steve talk about yoga at a Tualatin Chamber of Commerce meeting, I was curious to know more.  Having suffered from shoulder and neck problems for years, and receiving no relief through chiropractic, naturopathic, acupuncture, acupressure or physical therapy, I figured I had nothing to lose.

After a month of doing the yoga movements Steve taught me, and being rigorous in practicing it daily, I have a greater range of motion, less pain and better balance overall.  Further, the practice leaves me with a mental clarity I would not have believed, being naturally skeptical by nature with regards to “these types of practice”.

Consider me a believer now, and Thanks, Steve!

A sincere letter of recommendation for Steve Davis.

I have been under the practice of, and learning from Steve for just over a year.     His beneficial knowledge and professional experience have had amazing benefits to my well being.  Steve employs a variety of skilled methods to find what muscles or postures were causing me discomfort.   Every technique he used was versed with a profound body of experience, respect and years of practice.  I am also continually impressed by Steve’s willingness to share his knowledge about exactly what he is doing and how it benefits me.  In my opinion, Steve is much more than a Licensed Massage Therapist and Yogi; He is a master practitioner of the world’s most ancient health and healing arts and therapies.

Peace,

Chaz H.

• “Steve Davis is a real healer.
I have been seeing him for over three years, and he helps me a lot with my health problems. I had frozen shoulders from my work, and he made my hands and shoulders start to move again freely, with no pain. I feel much better because he knows how to help people in my situation. He uses special techniques, including hot stones and yoga, and everything together really relieved my muscle and joint pain. I highly recommend Steve to anyone needing a massage therapist.
Vania”

• “Steve Davis is an awesome yoga teacher. His expertise and knowledge of classical yoga surpasses all other yoga classes I have taken. In a few weeks of practicing yoga with Steve, I have attained significant body strength, flexibility, and energy. I also feel more alive in spirit, body and mind. Steve is a great teacher who can help you progress on an accelerated path to fitness and wellness. He takes time during yoga class to give each of his students individual instruction on each asana pose which is very important. Yoga is body, spirit, soul, beauty, grace and art all in one that Steve performs and teaches very well. Thank you Steve. I honor your light and path as a yoga teacher and friend.
Marilyn”

• “I have been attending yoga classes and receiving massages from Steve for a little over a month now, and I can tell a great deal of difference in how I feel. I sleep MUCH better – fall asleep immediately and back again should I wake up in the middle of the night. This was not my pattern previously. Also, my digestion is better and I have lots more energy. Steve discovered that I have a slight case of scoliosis in my back and is using both massage and yoga postures to correct it, along with helping me find exercise machines in the gym that can also be beneficial. I can highly recommend Steve for both yoga and massage. He is highly trained, has had a lot of experience in these disciplines, and is very focused on doing the best possible job for all his clients.
Sandy”

• “I have been taking Yoga from Steve Davis of Healing Light for over a year now. In that time, I have made amazing progress. Steve provides patient, individualized attention to a student’s personal goals. Class is tailored to meet those needs. And it is never boring. New poses are introduced and there is a lot of variety in the warm-up. Although I have participated in yoga classes on and off for several years and had many different teachers, I feel that Steve’s class is responsible for my increased flexibility, strength, balance, and ability to maintain my peaceful frame of mind throughout a busy day. I highly recommend Steve to any beginning or advanced student.
Irene”

• “I went to Steve for constant tightness in my shoulders. His massage was like no other I’ve ever received! He really gets in, works on problem areas, and seems to know where they are. He went out of his way to study my situation and found ways to resolve it. He has relieved my pain; it took several sessions of massage, his hot rocks, and yoga stretches. My fascia adhesions are gone, he has worked them loose! After my first massage I noticed I could turn my neck further than before, breathe, and stand up straight, while walking uphill . . . I highly recommend Steve!!!
Chris”

Dear Steve Davis,
Thank you so much for taking the time to come talk to our class and teach us about yoga. We had a lot of fun learning about the history of yoga as well as learning some of the yoga poses. We never knew about how music was incorporated into yoga. You taught us a lot about the importance of the role yoga can play in living a healthy lifestyle.

One of our classes favorite parts of your presentation was when you played the flute for us. It really engaged our minds into learning yoga and meditation. Again, thank you for driving out here and teaching our class. Good luck on your trip. We hope you have a blast and learn a ton!
Sincerely,

Awareness, Alignment

Awareness, Alignment = Performance, Supreme Wellness

The two A‘s. Awareness, and Alignment are equally important, and both reinforce each other into a model of Performance and Supreme Wellness.

Two pillars form the model of Performance and Supreme Wellness at Healing Light Yoga and Massage. One pillar is Alignment, to align with gravity, through alignment with neutral posture. And the other pillar is Awareness, to be aware and in the moment, which helps with accurate perception and memory. Both of these pillars work together to support health, well-being, and performance in life.

This will help you in all aspects of your life, to perform well, and to enjoy life. This includes all activities and job descriptions: athlete, actor, actress, singer, dancer, musician, business executive, military, teacher, employee, housewife, student, etc.

Awareness

We work together to achieve awareness of the present moment, to improve your perception, memory, and awareness of all, especially the gravity line in proper posture alignment.

Alignment

We  work together to achieve improvement in your neutral posture alignment. This is done through posture assessment, and then a structured program will be designed for you to help you achieve neutral posture alignment.

Method of two pillars – Alignment, Awareness

My method is a fusion of many different disciplines with long years of experience into my own proprietary method of achieving results in cognitive improvement of accurate perception, memory, and structural alignment, leading to improved performance in all aspects of your life.

Present Moment Course

Being in the present moment will improve perception and memory skills.

Method of Present Moment Course

Learn to be in the moment, through clearing the mind.  Methods include: sound, music, singing, words, actions, movement, according to the learning needs of each person.

Structural Alignment

First, we will do a posture assessment, then have you stand behind a plumb line and take four photos comparing your posture to the Skeletal System Chart. The photos are optional. They will show a baseline in which to compare your progress as we work together over time. The photos are private, just between you and me. If you don’t want any photos taken, that’s OK.

Here is the plumb line at my studio, for posture assessment through observation, and optional photos taken at intervals.

Healing Light Kata

Next, we will do some movement exercises, which I have developed. I have ten sets of these exercises, which are a fusion of Yoga, Ta’i Chi Ch’uan, and Posture exercises. Each set takes about five to ten minutes to perform, once learned. They are designed to strengthen, align, and balance the musculature around the joints and align the body properly into neutral posture.

Massage Therapy

After that, we can do a focused Massage Therapy Session, based on any restrictions that we have found in your postural balance, to help increase range of motion, reduce and eliminate any pain, and improve your performance.

The Massage Therapy Session may include ten modalities, a fusion of Structural Alignment, Zen Shiatsu, Chinese, including Acupressure and Tui Na, Traditional Thai, Swedish, Deep Tissue, Sports, Medical, Hot Stone, and Ice.

Make an appointment, and we can discuss it! No charge to come in and talk!

Schedule Online Now

Four Sessions

I suggest scheduling four sessions, once per week, and see how your progress is at the end of the four weeks. We will take posture photos at the first session, and again at the fourth session. Of course, the photos are optional. Then we can decide whether the work is done, or keep going.

Does it work? Yes, it does! Check out the many testimonials from my clients.

Testimonials

Here are all the necessary forms, or just make an appointment, and you can fill out the Client Intake form when you arrive, and sign the Studio Policy form. It’s very simple, straightforward, just how I have designed it.

There is also a Physician’s Prescription and Letter of Referral Form for insurance billing.

History

The Present Moment Course is something that I have been working on my entire life, but especially since January 1993, more than 21 years ago.

Here is a photo from that time, when I visited my late friend Abhi Bhattacharya, the famous Indian actor and long-time friend, personal secretary, and worldwide travel companion of our late mutual friend, Sri Dadaji (Amiya Roy Chowdhury).

At that time, I went to India to study North Indian Classical Music for the voice and bansuri (bamboo flute).

I studied bansuri with Pandit Malhar Kulkarni, one of the finest artists on bansuri, at that time in his late 70’s. He did not speak very much English. He taught Indian Classical Music the way that it has been taught by rote for hundreds of years, with very little of it written down. The student must follow the teacher, and repeat what is being played.

At first I could only repeat seven or eight notes, and this really frustrated me, as I had traveled eight thousand miles, and spent thousands of dollars to be there to learn this music from the bansuri master. After three weeks of daily lessons and practicing five to six hours per day, I was able to remember 30 to 35 notes without error.

I also had intensive voice lessons in Calcutta (Kolkata) with different teachers, studying both North Indian Classical Music and Rabinadranath Tagore (Rabindrasangeet) songs.

The trip lasted about three months. Upon my return, my business with teaching and outfitting high climbers on radio towers and antennae for the US Government started to take off, and I started more international travel. Over the next seven years, I traveled to 18 countries around the world, and studied ten languages to help me communicate with the climbers and others in the countries I was visiting.

I discovered that I could repeat anything anyone said or did, and that I remembered it later without problems of recall.

What I determined is that the music practice had opened a door in my awareness. This door, once opened, always remains open.

Over time, my skills have steadily increased. When I went back to school to study to become a Licensed Massage Therapist, I ended up with a 4.0 GPA the last two terms. The first term was rough, as I had not been in school for 22 years. I studied advanced courses, Asian track, 801 hours, graduating from East West College of the Healing Arts in March 2006 with a 3.5 GPA.

Over the years, I have been incorporating this knowledge in my yoga classes to help others.

I think you will find that being in the present moment will bring a profound and lasting, positive change to your life.

Namaste,
Steve

My Dad

Backcountry Exploration and Natural Beauty – a tribute to my dad

My dad was an explorer, back-country adventurer, and he loved the wilderness, wildlife, and nature. He was also a highly skilled doctor who cared very much about all of his patients, a family physician, MD, general practitioner.

My Dad passed away in April, and last weekend we held a memorial in his honor.

I miss him very much, and we were very close.

Exploring the wilderness, mountains, streams, wild rivers, mountain lakes, and back country was very different back in the 50’s and 60’s.

We would usually go out into the back country for about a week. We traveled fast, and very light, much lighter than hikers and backpackers today. We did not have a tent, or stove.  We did sometimes put up a lean-to. We drank water from streams and snow melt.

We often hiked about 10 to 13 miles per day, sometimes more, and climbed the highest mountains in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Sometimes, we traveled cross-country without any trail, fording rivers, and climbing up and down steep ridges that were a couple thousand feet high. And we did traverses of steep glaciers, scree, and climbed steep faces of rock, snow-capped mountains, whatever was necessary to travel to our destination. All this was done without any GPS or cell phone.

We used our natural sense to read the terrain, and we had map and compass. Often, the maps were inaccurate. So we used compass and line of sight to landmarks, followed streams, used celestial navigation if available, and if not, just used our natural sense of direction.

What I learned then has stayed with me, evolved and refined over the years, and it has influenced how I view health, healing, vitality, fitness, and life. I have much to say, but I will let these photos and music tell this story for now.

I produced a film from images – mostly transparencies –  that were mostly shot by him, with some by me, and set it to three of my original songs as a tribute to my dad. It runs just under nine minutes. Here is a link to it on Dropbox. It should open up without any problem on your computer, tablet, or phone.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/39038402/dadmemorial.mp4

It may give a sense of the beauty that we experienced. My hope is that this natural beauty and wildlife must be preserved so that others can experience it, and nature can remain strong, including all of us and wildlife.

Healing Light Yoga and Massage

is about you and your awareness of your body, mind, spirit, and the world within and around you.

* Learn natural movement with graceful power, speed, and focus through my fusion of YOGA, T’AI CHI CH’UAN, AND NEUTRAL POSTURE AWARENESS.

* Realize your power, focus your mind, increase energy, and find your purpose in life.

* Increase balance, stamina, strength, flexibility, awareness, relaxation, internal and external power.

Healing Light Yoga refers to the healing power of the sun. It is said that one can gaze at the sun safely when it is touching or below the horizon. This happens at sunrise and sunset. At other times of the day, it is not safe to look directly at the sun for long periods of time.

It is said that gazing at the sun in this manner is safe and it is an ancient healing practice, in Ayurveda, and in my opinion, it was also known in long-forgotten cultures.

My recommendation for healing any disorder is to be outside in the sun, relax, and drink pure water. Keep a peaceful mind. The rays of the sun will purify and heal the body. The water will flush and clean the body. The mind will relax, and the life-giving power of the sun and water will lift the spirit, cleanse the body of impurities, and heal disease processes.

Healing is a lifelong interest of mine and a topic that I will return to later with more comments. I make no guarantees that this will work, of course!

Namaste,

Steve
